Giving Thanks that the Holidays are over….

January! Well, almost February, actually, but who’s keeping score? The holidays are over, and now it’s time to check out what went on during the annual insanity of ThankChristmaHannahKwanzaa that does its utmost to turn us all into gibbering psychological wrecks. Yeehaa!

First off, Thanksgiving. For the past almost 40 years, Oregon artist and sometime Pacific NW College of Art instructor Paul Missal (recently featured on Oregon Art Beat http://www.opb.org/programs/artbeat/segments/view/808) has been giving a Thanksgiving party at his home in Wilsonville. Open to area artists and friends of Paul, as well as a place to go for PNCA Alumni and students who are away from home for the holidays, this has been a seasonal event for John Maddin and Amy Sacks for many years. Sadly, Paul announced at this years party that he would not be holding another Thanksgiving party for awhile, that it was time to take a rest for a few years. Sometimes as many as 100 people would be at Paul’s for Thanksgiving, so that’s a lot of preparation. We’re going to miss the party, Paul!

And then along comes Boxing Day. That’s right, that national tradition (well, in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, at least) held on the day after Christmas, where servants and employees receive “Christmas Boxes” from their superiors and employers. This past Boxing Day was spent at the home of an artist friend of ours, S.W. “Conch” Conser (who has a dual citizenship with the U.S. and Jolly Old England), who took the opportunity to turn this very British holiday and turned it into a funky artist get-together. Instead of Christmas Boxes, we all just brought unwanted Christmas presents to re-gift, just before watching the Dr. Who Xmas special. Hail Britannia!

And that’s all for this holiday season. John hardly got any art work done, as usual during December, but he’s back at the drawing table. With a little luck, he’ll have the ABC book done and ready to send off to a publisher in a couple of months, and you can all see what the fuss is about. Halloween 2012

For the last nine years, our friends Marianne and Adrian have held an annual pumpkin carving party appropriately called Get Your Pumpkin On. Adrian is a cartoonist and our crack web designer. Most of the participants are cartoonists and artists, and boy does the pulpy pumpkin flesh fly. Long gone are the days when three triangles and a lumpy crescent shape were de rigueur for Halloween. Illustrious illustrator John Maddin and the other artists take this very seriously, amassing chosen tools to carry out said carving, as you see below. Also included are some family photos of the Walch -Maddin costume regalia.

Artist John Maddin is never one to skimp on details, jack-o-lanterns included.

John Maddin’s rabbit drawing for Hopper’s House, a beach cabin in Cannon Beach, OR.

Illustrator John Maddin is known for is depictions of animals, cute and noble. Recently, DesignWise Graphic Design Studio contracted John to do a rabbit illustration for a beach house logo in Cannon Beach. They liked John’s illustration so much they are having him draw the beach house as well.
